On the occasion of the visit to Italy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an artistic work was presented to him as part of a broader cultural cooperation project aimed at strengthening the historic bond between India and Italy, two ancient civilizations united by an extraordinary sensitivity toward art and philosophy.
The choice of artist fell naturally on Jnananjana Dasa, born Giampaolo Tomassetti, who has dedicated decades of his life to the study and expression of Indian sacred art, developing a deep and authentic dialogue with its forms, symbols, and spiritual vision.
The subject was a panoramic view of Varanasi, one of the oldest and most spiritually resonant cities in the world, a universal symbol of India’s millenary tradition and the profound sacred dimension that permeates its culture.
Jnananjana Dasa is an artist of extraordinary sensitivity and one of the pioneers of devotional art within our movement. He played a fundamental role in the development of the Vaishnava Art Academy alongside Ram Das and Dhrti Devi Dasi, renowned disciples of Srila Prabhupada, personally instructed by him. The Academy, together with the one in Los Angeles, contributed significantly to the illustrations found in BBT (Bhaktivedanta Book Trust) publications, works that have inspired millions of people around the world.
When this commission was proposed to him, Jnananjana Dasa accepted with great enthusiasm, immediately grasping its cultural and spiritual importance.
A particularly meaningful moment came during the meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who, despite an exceptionally demanding schedule and the late hour, personally met Jnananjana Dasa and inquired about the details of the work. This gesture once again revealed the respectful, approachable, and deeply human quality that distinguishes him, as well as his sincere appreciation for art and spirituality as instruments of dialogue among peoples.
Today, Jnananjana Dasa is an internationally recognized artist. His work spans many styles and subjects, yet always retains a profound spiritual vision that shines through each piece with authenticity and quiet strength. His art does not merely depict images; it evokes inner states, spiritual memory, and a living sense of the sacred.
His devotional works also form the heart of the museum at Villa Vrindavana, a unique space born from the shared vision of a remarkable team: the artists themselves, Mahaprabhu Dasa as principal supporter and benefactor, and Villa Vrindavana, which opened the most prestigious spaces of its historic 15th-century Medici villa to the project.
This work, dedicated to Varanasi, is far more than a painting. It is a genuine cultural and spiritual bridge between two great traditions. Through the art of Jnananjana Dasa, the spirituality of India finds expression through the sensibility of an Italian artist, giving life to a work destined to become a symbol of friendship, dialogue, and mutual inspiration between the two nations.
At a time when the world is in ever greater need of authentic connections and universal values, initiatives such as this remind us that art still has the power to unite different cultures through beauty, respect, and a shared longing for the sacred.
In an interview with Republic World, a leading English news source in India, Jnananjana Dasa described his meeting with Modi here. He was interviewed separately by Asian News International (ANI). You can watch the brief interview here.
