Varanasi Municipal Commissioner inspects Salarpur flood damage and orders relief measures
The rising water levels of the Ganga and Varuna rivers have led to worsening flood conditions in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. In response, Varanasi Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal conducted an inspection of the flood-affected areas of Salarpur ward by boat on September 4.
During the inspection, Commissioner Nagpal visited Rasulgarh, Salarpur, Konia, Saraiyan, Pulkohana, and Khalispur, where he issued instructions to officials responsible for relief work and sanitation. He directed the immediate removal of garbage along the Varuna riverbanks to prevent waste from contaminating the river.
To control mosquito populations and reduce disease risk, strict orders were given to spray insecticides, use anti-larvae treatments, and carry out regular fogging in the affected riverside areas. Additionally, chlorine tablets were distributed to residents to prevent waterborne diseases caused by contaminated drinking water, with guidance provided on their proper usage.
The flood relief camp in Salarpur was also instructed to maintain adequate lighting, sanitation facilities including toilets, and ensure regular cleaning to minimise inconvenience for shelter residents.
Local councillor Hanuman Prasad, Sarnath Zonal Officer Indra Vijay Yadav, sanitation inspectors, junior engineers from the civil and water supply departments, and numerous municipal officials and employees accompanied the Commissioner during the inspection.
Meanwhile, Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari conducted a detailed survey of the flood-affected coastal areas by motorboat on the same day, monitoring the worsening flood situation caused by the continuous rise of the Ganga and Varuna rivers.
